New Mexico SOS Business Search: How to Look Up Any LLC or Corporation

New Mexico runs one of the cheapest and most private LLC regimes in the United States, and its business register shows it. The Secretary of State's records hold 727,126 business entities, 488,930 of them active, and a record 52,725 new entities were registered in 2025. This guide explains how the New Mexico business entity search (also called the New Mexico SOS business search) works, what the numbers mean, which industries and places the companies sit in, what the register does and does not publish, and how to get New Mexico company data at scale.

How many companies are registered in New Mexico?

The New Mexico Secretary of State (SOS) does not publish a running count of registered businesses. Its 2025 annual report gives workload figures instead: the Business Services Division handled 200,079 business transactions in 2025, 35,340 more than in 2024 (+21%), answered 41,454 calls and generated $3.38 million for the state's general fund in fiscal 2025. Those transactions include notary and apostille requests, so they measure activity, not companies.

Counting the register itself gives the real picture. As of September 2026 the SOS business register holds 727,126 entities across all statuses, with records going back to the early 1900s.

778,520New Mexico companies in Global Database

Global Database tracks 778,520 companies located in New Mexico, of which 504,704 are active and 257,769 inactive. That total is higher than the SOS register because it adds companies formed in other states that operate in New Mexico, matched to their records wherever they were incorporated.

Why the active count runs so high. New Mexico LLCs file no annual or biennial report, so an LLC is never struck off for missing one. Once formed, most LLCs stay "Active" until someone files to dissolve them. Corporations, which must file biennial reports, drop out of good standing much faster. Read "Active" in New Mexico as "not closed", not "trading".

New business registrations in New Mexico, year over year

New registrations have more than doubled in six years, from 23,908 in 2019 to 52,725 in 2025, and are 3.3 times the 2015 level. Growth came in bursts: +23.9% in 2021, +18.4% in 2023 and +20.0% in 2025, with a pause in 2024 (+3.9%). By mid-September 2026 another 36,210 entities had been registered.

Global Database's dataset tells the same story from a wider base. It counts 61,440 New Mexico companies incorporated in 2025, up 35.4% on 2024, and 49,186 more between 1 January and 4 November 2026, a pace of roughly 58,000 for the full year. Both sources agree that 2025 was the busiest year on record and that 2026 is running close to it.

Federal data points the same way. Census Bureau figures show 30,126 business applications (EIN filings) in New Mexico from January to August 2026, 12.5% more than a year earlier, and 27.7% of them were "high-propensity" applications likely to hire staff. Bernalillo County alone logged 22,406 applications in 2025, about 33.6 per 1,000 residents, the 13th highest rate among the 621 US counties with 100,000 or more people.

Active vs inactive companies in New Mexico

Two-thirds of all New Mexico records are active. The largest inactive group is revoked entities (129,900), which the state has struck off, typically for missing reports or fees. Next come voluntarily dissolved entities (57,433) and out-of-state companies that withdrew their New Mexico registration (15,725).

New Mexico entities by legal form

LLCs dominate with 467,030 records (64%), followed by corporations (198,233, 27%) and nonprofit corporations (43,163, 6%). The LLC share keeps climbing because most new filings are LLCs: they cost $50 to form, need no annual report and do not put members on the public record.

New Mexico companies by industry and size

The SOS register records no industry codes, so sector analysis has to come from enriched data. In Global Database's New Mexico dataset, the largest classified sectors are other services (12,623 companies), construction (11,708) and professional, scientific and technical services (11,297), the sector that includes contractors around Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories. Retail (9,268) and health care (7,645) follow. Oil, gas and mining companies number 910, but they carry outsized weight in the Permian Basin counties of Lea and Eddy.

Sector counts cover companies with an industry classification; most registry-only LLCs carry none.

By size, New Mexico is a market of micro-businesses. Of the 578,131 New Mexico companies with a headcount figure in Global Database, 95% employ fewer than 10 people. Only 3,723 have 50 or more staff, and 761 employ 250 or more. For sales and lending teams, that small group of mid-size and large employers is where most of the state's addressable B2B spend sits.

Where New Mexico's businesses are based

Albuquerque is home to 123,315 entities, about 17% of the register, followed by Santa Fe (45,695) and Las Cruces (15,137). The Permian Basin towns of Hobbs and Carlsbad rank high for their size. Switch the chart to see the other side of the story: thousands of New Mexico entities list a principal address in another state. Grouped by region, the Albuquerque metro (Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties) accounts for about 148,700 entities, three times more than greater Santa Fe and the north, while the Permian Basin towns of Lea, Eddy and Chaves counties hold about 21,400.

Many records carry no city, so these figures undercount every location.

The New Mexico anonymous LLC effect

A New Mexico anonymous LLC is one formed without naming its members or managers anywhere on the public record. New Mexico is one of a handful of states that allow it, and the cheapest of them to maintain. That makes it popular with investors, holding structures and privacy-minded owners from other states, which is why Wilmington and Dover in Delaware, New York, Houston and Dallas all appear among the most common principal addresses of New Mexico entities.

StateLLC formation feeRecurring state filingMembers on public record
New Mexico$50NoneNo
Wyoming$100Annual report, from $60No
Delaware$110Annual tax, $300No

For due diligence this matters in three ways. A New Mexico LLC may be a shell for assets or operations in another state. Its "Active" status says little about whether it trades (see our Delaware registry guide for the other side of many of these structures). And because US companies no longer report beneficial owners to FinCEN, the register may be the only public record, and it names only a registered agent. Ownership has to be traced through linked records elsewhere: the companies it is registered with in other states, its officers there, property and court filings.

New Mexico vs neighbouring states

Per resident, New Mexico keeps pace with Arizona at about 14.2 business applications per 1,000 people from January to August 2026. Its growth rate is the slowest in the region, though: +12.5%, against more than 23% in Colorado, Utah and Arizona and 33.6% in Oklahoma.

Applications count requests for an employer identification number, not state registrations, so they include sole proprietors and exclude entities that never request an EIN.

Registry counts vs real businesses

The register and the economy tell different stories. The SBA counts 172,113 small businesses in New Mexico, 99% of all firms, employing 340,706 people. The register lists 2.8 times as many active entities. And while the SOS added 43,938 new entities in 2024, federal data shows only 6,441 employer establishments opened between March 2023 and March 2024, while 6,960 closed, a net loss of 519.

SBA small-business counts include firms without employees. Establishment figures cover businesses with employees only.

Much of the gap is made up of holding LLCs, real estate vehicles, dormant LLCs that were never dissolved, nonprofits and foreign registrations of out-of-state groups. Anyone building a prospect list, a risk model or a market sizing from raw New Mexico registry data needs to filter for these. The state economy that the trading companies serve is around $110 billion, led by oil and gas, federal research labs, film and television production, agriculture and tourism.

New Mexico SOS business search: how to look up a company

The SOS has moved business filings to SOS Enterprise (SOSE), and since December 2024 every filing must be made online; paper filings are no longer accepted. The free NM SOS business search runs on the same platform. It is the official New Mexico Secretary of State business search, and the same tool serves as the New Mexico LLC search, the New Mexico corporation search and the general New Mexico entity search: every entity type sits in one register.

  1. Open the business search on the SOS Enterprise portal (enterprise.sos.nm.gov). No account is needed.
  2. Search by business name, business ID or registered agent. Partial names work; leave out "LLC" or "Inc." to widen the results.
  3. Narrow results by status or entity type if the name is common.
  4. Open a record to see business ID, entity type, status, standing, formation date, principal office, registered agent and, for corporations, officers and directors.
  5. Use the filing history to view filed documents such as articles, amendments and corporate reports.
  6. Order a certificate of good standing and compliance ($50) through the portal if a bank or counterparty needs official proof.

What New Mexico company data is available, and what is not

The New Mexico register confirms that an entity exists and where to serve it. It says very little about who owns or controls an LLC, and nothing about size or finances. The right-hand column shows what Global Database adds on top.

Federal reporting does not fill the ownership gap. Under FinCEN's March 2025 interim final rule, companies formed in the United States no longer have to report beneficial ownership information. Proposals to modernise New Mexico's LLC law with recurring reports, such as House Bill 281 in 2023, did not become law.

Limitations of New Mexico registry data

  • No official totals. The SOS publishes workload figures, not counts of active entities, so trends have to be built from the records.
  • "Active" is inflated. LLCs never file reports, so abandoned LLCs stay active for years.
  • Anonymous ownership. LLC members and managers are not collected, and federal BOI reporting no longer covers US companies.
  • Stale officer data. Corporate officers update only every two years, and late filers fall further behind.
  • Incomplete addresses. Many records have no principal city, or the out-of-state address of a formation agent.
  • No bulk download or API. Large-scale use means record-by-record retrieval or a licensed provider.
  • No industry, size or financial data. You cannot segment or size companies from the register alone.
  • Tribal businesses. Entities formed under tribal law may not appear in the state register at all.

How Global Database adds to New Mexico registry data

The Secretary of State answers whether an entity exists. Global Database starts with that official record and adds the context New Mexico does not hold:

  • Cross-state coverage. New Mexico entities sit next to their home-state records in Delaware, Texas, California and every other state, in one schema.
  • Officers and group structure. Sourced officers and directors, and parent and subsidiary links where a group is on record.
  • Firmographics. NAICS and SIC codes, headcount bands, websites and LinkedIn pages that the register does not collect.
  • Delivery that fits your stack. A REST API, full and delta bulk feeds, an MCP server, Claude and ChatGPT connectors and a Microsoft 365 Copilot app.
  • Monitoring. Alerts when a New Mexico counterparty is revoked, dissolved, withdraws or changes its registered agent or officers.
  • Global reach. The same schema covers 600M+ companies from 400+ official registries in 200+ countries.

Frequently asked questions

How do I do a New Mexico business entity search?

Use the free NM business search on the New Mexico Secretary of State's SOS Enterprise portal at enterprise.sos.nm.gov. Search by business name, business ID or registered agent, then open a record to see status, entity type, formation date, registered agent and filing history. No account is needed.

How many businesses are registered in New Mexico?

The Secretary of State's register holds 727,126 business entities across all statuses as of September 2026. Of these, 488,930 are active, about 230,600 are inactive and 7,548 are pending. Global Database tracks 778,520 companies located in New Mexico, including out-of-state companies operating there.

How many new businesses were formed in New Mexico in 2025?

52,725 new entities were registered with the Secretary of State in 2025, a record and 20% more than in 2024. Global Database counts 61,440 New Mexico companies incorporated in 2025, up 35.4%.

Is the New Mexico Secretary of State business search free?

Yes. The New Mexico SOS business search on SOS Enterprise is free: searching and viewing entity records and filed documents costs nothing. A certificate of good standing costs $50, and filings carry their own fees.

Can I find the owner of a New Mexico LLC?

Usually not from a New Mexico LLC lookup on the state register. New Mexico does not require LLCs to list members or managers, and US companies no longer report beneficial owners to FinCEN. Ownership has to be traced through linked records in other states, officers, property records or court filings.

Do New Mexico LLCs have to file an annual report?

No. New Mexico LLCs file no annual or biennial report. Corporations file a biennial report ($25, with a $200 late penalty) and nonprofits file an annual report ($10). A 2023 bill to introduce triennial LLC reports did not pass.

What does "revoked" mean in a New Mexico business search?

Revoked means the state has cancelled the entity's right to exist or do business, usually for failing to file required reports or pay fees. Revoked entities make up 129,900 records, about 18% of the register.

Why do so many New Mexico companies have out-of-state addresses?

Many are New Mexico anonymous LLCs. They cost $50 to form, need no annual report and keep members off the public record, so investors and holding companies from other states use them. Wilmington and Dover in Delaware, New York, Houston and Dallas are the most common out-of-state principal addresses.

What industries are New Mexico companies in?

Among classified New Mexico companies, the largest sectors are other services, construction and professional, scientific and technical services, followed by retail and health care. 95% of companies with headcount data employ fewer than 10 people.

Can I download New Mexico business data in bulk?

The Secretary of State does not publish a bulk download or API for business entities; large extracts require a public records request. Global Database supplies all New Mexico companies through bulk feeds, an API and MCP, alongside every other US state.
